MAYLA is a non-profit organization committed to engaging the youth that live in and around Minneapolis in the sport of lacrosse. MAYLA pledges to provide a safe environment in which young athletes, from beginners to the more-experienced, develop lacrosse skills, an appreciation of teamwork and respect for themselves and others.
MAYLA has programs in the Spring and the Summer. The Spring season runs from late-March through late-May. The Summer season runs from early-June through the end of July. Registration is conducted online and opens in early February. Registration is organized by school grade and gender. For Girls the levels are: K-3rd, 4th-6th and 7th-8th. For Boys the levels are: K-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th. A general description of each program is below.
Girls 4th-6th, 7th-8th - teams join the MSSLAX leagues in the spring and the summer; generally there are 2-3 "events" (practices or games) each week; during the spring, "events" can be Monday-Saturday; during the summer, "events" are only Monday-Thursday evenings.
Boys 7th-8th - teams join the MBSLA league in the spring and the YLM league in the summer; the spring league consists of 10 games - two on each of five consecutive Saturdays from mid-April to mid-May; generally there are 2 practices each week; in the summer there are 2-3 "events" (practices or games) each week restricted to Monday-Thursday evenings.
Boys 3rd-4th, 5th-6th - teams join the YLM league in the summer and generally have 2-3 "events" (practices or games) each week restricted to Monday-Thursday evenings; during the spring, the teams have 3 "events" (typically 2 during Monday-Thursday and 1 on the weekend); these "events" take place indoors on hockey rinks that are "turfed".
Girls K-3rd, Boys K-2nd - there are developmental programs in the spring and the summer; during the spring there are 2 indoor sessions each week - Wednesday evening and Saturday morning; during the summer the sessions are outdoors and take place on Saturday mornings; tennis balls and beginner sticks are supplied by MAYLA.
Facilities - MAYLA uses Bassett Creek Field (2100 1st 1/2 Avenue North) as our home field beginning May 1st. We also use Calhoun Field (at the Northwest corner of Lake Calhoun) in the summer. We also use the outdoor turf at Parade Ice Arena and rinks at Parade and Northeast Ice Arena for our spring program. "Away" games are player throughout the metro.
Equipment - except for the K-3rd programs, families supply their own equipment (for boys - stick, helmet, shoulder pads, arm guards, gloves, athletic protector; for girls - stick, goggles). MAYLA has a limited supply of equipment available for families receiving financial assistance and/or trying the sport for the first time.
Registration Fee - during 2010, the range of fees for a single season was $150-$275. Scholarships are available.
